Planning permission no longer needed for most loft conversions

First published

Under the rules in England, most loft conversions don’t need planning permission. Loft work falls under ‘permitted development’, which allows certain changes without applying for permission.

How much space you can add

  • Detached and semi-detached houses: up to 50 cubic metres of extra roof space.
  • Terraced houses: up to 40 cubic metres.

You can extend the attic by changing the roof shape, as long as it isn’t higher than the existing roof, or add dormer windows.
