Is my roof suitable for a loft conversion?

First published

Before going ahead with a loft conversion, the first question is whether your roof is suitable. Most are – but roofs built with trusses may not be, and you need at least 2.4 metres of height at the tallest point. Changing a roof’s structure can be expensive.

Roof pitch

A roof pitch of around 30 degrees is ideal; a lower pitch means less head height and less usable space. In the UK this usually isn’t a problem, as most roofs are between 25 and 35 degrees.

Floor space and obstructions

Think about how much floor space you’d gain – you want the result to be worth the work. Check for obstructions in the roof space too, such as a chimney stack or water tank.

Are you allowed to change your roof?

Some properties can’t be altered because they’re in a conservation area or are listed buildings. If you’re not sure whether you can have a loft conversion, get advice from a professional.
